WWLD? 2
Another article about Far from the Madding Gerund , this one in The New York Times.
Orts, scraps, and fragments from my days spent dictionary-diving and co-hosting the language-loving public radio show, "A Way with Words"

Though I'm glad it tipped me off to the Language Log, I'm not quite so fond of *this* article. It fabricates a dichotomy between (descriptive) linguists -- and grammarians, ridiculed here as "the grammar police" -- which I take to mean anyone who is at all prescriptivist.
As though there's no reason to ever try to hold the line when the blade of language gets duller from the blurring of useful distinctions.
Well, you've really zeroed in on the big debate, Daz.
And yes, as a writer, I think prescriptivism should be mainly about clarity, and the useful distinctions that help promote it. Grammar shoudl be our friend, not our foe.
